The Food Knot

Our Food Knot is an autobiographical story of how a young child comes to understand the problems of the world. Throughout the film, the child becomes conscious of the disconnection and interconnection within the food system by exploring climate change, disrupted nutrient cycles, displaced people, urbanization, loss of farmers, loss of food knowledge and globalization. Portrayed as seven knots, these problems get recounted through animation and live interview footage resulting in an ecological coming of age story.

Generation

I first heard Eivor’s song in the shower. The song’s subtle and bold transformations and contrasts struck me in the depths of my stomach as a song of this time on Earth and for this generation. This youtube video collage moves from individual organisms to the emergent phenomena of organisms. As the film reckons with human violence against other beings, it also highlights the rise of humans emerging to stand up against this violence. The film finally grapples with the turmoil of standing up, continual loss of habitat and organisms with building alternatives. Fire and decomposition give way to new growth.
